Daniel drove Emily in his pickup truck all the way into town and down the cul-de-sac where Jack Cooper’s woodwork shop was located. Emily wondered what kind of surprise Daniel could have in store for her that would be in the woodshop. It must be something handcrafted.

They parked and Daniel strolled up to the steel shutters, rapping his knuckles against them. Emily got out and shut the passenger side door, then joined Daniel at his side as the shutters rattled open. The sound of spinning blades and radio music grew louder. The air was dusty with the fine particles of sawn wood, the smell of which Emily loved.

As the cloudiness dispersed, Emily could make out the figure of Jack Cooper standing before her, wearing dark blue coveralls and a white mask over his mouth. He pulled back the mask.

“Daniel, how’s it going?” he asked. He shook his employee’s hand. Then to Emily he added, “Emily, nice to see you. What are you doing here?”

“You tell me,” Emily replied, laughing. “Daniel has some kind of surprise for me.”

“Ohhh,” Jack said, casting a knowing expression in Daniel’s direction. “The top-secret wedding gift Daniel’s been working on. It’s taken him weeks. Glad I’m going to get to see the big reveal!”

Emily nodded, realizing she was a bag of nerves. Daniel liked to surprise her with romantic dates and wonderful gifts like the diamond necklace, but this was the first thing he’d actually crafted for her, the first time he’d physically created a gift for her. She was excited for the reveal, but also overwhelmed by the whole thing. Just moments ago she’d been accusing Daniel of all hosts of things and now he was going to surprise her with some thoughtful, romantic, handcrafted gift. She couldn’t help but feel like she just didn’t deserve it.

Daniel took her by the hand and led her through the dusty workshop, past a series of intimidating large saws and cutting machines. Some of the goods they were working on stood dotted around the place—a bed frame, a large banquet-sized dining table, and, to Emily’s delight, a giant chess set. She marveled at the talent the men and women who worked here possessed, proud that Daniel was amongst them.

Finally, Daniel stopped in a shadowy corner where a grubby white dust sheet covered up a bulky object, rectangular and hip height. Seeing it made Emily shiver with a mixture of excitement and nerves.

Daniel smiled at her. “Just to warn you, there is no hidden message with this gift. No persuasion intended.”

Emily frowned. “Intriguing.”

“So don’t freak out,” Daniel added.

“You do realize,” Emily said with a chuckle, “that telling someone not to freak out is the thing that makes them freak out.”

Daniel laughed and Emily heard the hint of nerves in it. She wondered what on earth could be beneath the sheet that would require qualification from Daniel and cause him such anxiety.

He took the corner of the sheet and pulled it back in one large flourish. Fine particles of dust flew up into the air, clouding Emily’s vision.
